She Put a 'Ring' On it (As in a Black Eye)

So, when a man gives a woman a ring then asks for it back … whose ring is it, anyway?
I’ve got two views on this one, in light of the woman who opened a can ‘O’ Whoop-hiss on her ex-boyfriend when he asked for the ring back.
IT’S HER RING, GET SERIOUS: On one hand, when a man gives a woman a ring it is a symbol of a lasting relationship he hopes to have. The ring’s significance is that it is the first of many of his possessions that she will be given. It is a gift. And people don’t take gifts back.

IT’S HIS RING, STOP PLAYIN’: A ring is a symbol of the person’s love, but like anything else you can default on it. More than likely, he will have to pay on the ring for several months or years to pay it off. When the relationship ends, then the premise of the ring ends too, in essence, the ring is worthless and he should be able to retrieve it. Unless she wants to take over the payments.
I see both sides, what about you?

yes, i def see both sides of the argument. i would soooo give the ring back though (if it was completely over). why would i want to hold onto the ring & all its baggage! loose him & the ring.

The ring used to be sure proof of breach of promise and a woman could sue a male because by asking her to marry him and then rescinding, he was said to have wasted her time, time she could have been using to build a relationship with someone else.I’m not sure it works quite that way in today’s world when women have other options for the future than marriage. The ring is more a traditional symbol and less of a legal evidence. Plus people don’t sue over breach of promise much these days. It also depended on who broke off the engagement, but men tended to not sue women and ask for the ring back. I’d give the ring back even if the man didn’t ask for it b/c I like the symbolism of breaking the connection completely. The ring thing is always a good topic for discussion.

I think it’s kinda rude to ask for the ring back…but if someone did I’d give it back with no hesitation. I’d only see a reason to hold on to it if the woman didn’t want the engagement called off and that could be her last piece of “them” she has to cherish. LOL

I was told as a general rule of thumb: When a couple gets engaged and then the guy ends the engagement, the girl can keep the ring and do what she pleases with it.If a girl ends it, she has to give the ring back.
